A placental abruption occurs when the placenta separates from the uterus during pregnancy. In a normal pregnancy, this will not occur until after the baby is born. Women who develop this condition will find that they are at risk for some additional complications.
For example, it is possible that they will begin losing a lot of blood, which can be dangerous for them. The baby is also in danger because they may not be receiving all the nutrients they need. This could cause them to be born early or to not develop fully before they are born.
Women who develop this condition will often find that they notice their baby is not moving around as much as it was before. It is also common for them to begin bleeding and to experience pain in their uterus as well. Many women also have symptoms of early labor when this condition develops.
For the most part, women are able to continue their pregnancy with a little extra monitoring from their doctor. However, if the baby or mother appears to be in distress or if there is substantial bleeding, it is possible that the mother will need to be hospitalized during the pregnancy. This will help keep both her and the baby safe during this time.
