An abruption placentae is a rare condition, but it is something that pregnant women should be able to recognize the symptoms for. During a normal pregnancy, the placenta will attach to the uterus while the baby is growing inside the mother. The placenta is that item that offers the baby the nutrients and oxygen that it needs to grow properly.

Usually, the placenta will stay in place until after the baby has been born. However, this is not always the case. It is possible for it to become detached early in the pregnancy, which can cause issues for both the mother and the baby.

MD000634When this separation occurs, a buildup of blood will be created between the placenta and the uterine wall. This can make it difficult for the mother because she will lose quite a bit of blood because of this. It is even possible for this blood to begin leaking from her vagina while she is still pregnant.

Depending on the amount of blood that is leaking, doctors will treat the condition in a variety of different ways. Since it isn’t possible to reattach the placenta, careful monitoring is usually the best option. However, in some cases, the mother will need to have a blood transfusion in order to replace the blood that she has lost.
